Porsche 911s are a bit like opinions — seemingly endless in variety, and even the least particular enthusiast accumulates more than necessary. Still, the 911 hasn't survived six decades because it disappoints; quite the opposite. A new and mysterious 911 variant is approaching, and while it will share plenty with its siblings, in a 911 that's rarely a drawback.

Porsche has locked in an April 14 reveal for the new model, though the automaker is keeping specifics tightly under wraps. Without disclosing particulars, Porsche called the new variant "particularly fun" and said it offers "pure driving pleasure."

The lone teaser image shows the car draped in a cover sheet that conceals most telling details, yet still yields some useful observations. Conspicuously absent is any rear wing, which eliminates track-focused variants like a new GT2 RS. Our best guess points to the long-rumored GT3 cabriolet.

Though the blanket camouflage makes confirmation tricky, what appear to be GT3-style hood vents are barely visible. Much like how you can identify a tree by how it stands, we can identify this as a GT car by its conventional door handles — a clear contrast to the flush-mounted handles on non-GT 911 variants. The 911 Speedster name also came to mind initially, though this new model appears to have a proper fixed roof, which would rule that out.

If the GT3 cabriolet theory holds, that implies Porsche's naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six howling unencumbered into open air. It would also mean a six-speed Porsche manual transmission — technically the lower-output gearbox option, but in an open-top 911, the distinction hardly matters.

Whatever form the new 911 takes, Porsche has a countdown running on its media site ahead of the reveal, which will stream live on both YouTube and the Porsche website. The unveil is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET.
